Wild Winter Storm in Strawberry

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

We have waited all winter for the snow, and boy did it deliver! If you have been following us on social media, then you have probably noticed the aftermath of this week’s snow storm. It began on Saturday evening and continued to pile snow at least two feet high, leaving cars engulfed and Highway 87 closed by Monday afternoon. We are set to break records!

Our very own Marina (Property Manager) and Dan (Owner of Windmill Coffee) trekked two miles, uphill in snow up to their knees just to get to the Inn this morning and serve our guests – THAT is how much they love The Strawberry Inn! We are so blessed to have them.

We also had the pleasure of having Tess Rafols of Arizona’s Family Channel 3 News as a guest during this incredible winter storm where she reported live from The Strawberry Inn throughout the weekend. Be sure to check her segments out on our IGTV on Instagram to see her experience in one of our tiny cottages with her family. It was so much fun to watch her kids experience the snow and icicles for the very first time! We hope they treasure this one-of-a-kind experience forever.

There is more snow expected for this Friday, so if you are staying with us later this week or early into next, please be sure you are prepared for a safe journey up to Strawberry. We recommend checking with ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportation) for the latest updates on road access and closures in the area. We also would encourage that you are equipped with a four-wheel drive vehicle and snow chains, if the weather requires them.

I know for those of you with little ones, one of the top reasons for visiting the snow is to enjoy a day of sledding! For an easy to access, kid-friendly hill, check out Green Valley Park in Payson. You don't have to worry about heading off-road, and when you're done sledding, you're close to town to grab a bite to eat. If you're looking for something off the beaten path, the local trailheads are an option as long as the gates are open. You may see cars parked along the side of the highway with people playing in the snow nearby. Please don't join them! It is unsafe, and could potentially earn you a ticket. Stick to designated parking areas for your snow play day! Have fun!
