One of the most common spots for outdoor adventure here (especially as the weather gets warmer!) is a local hike and swimming hole known as Water Wheel Falls. A few words of warning: this is a VERY popular spot to visit, especially on weekends. If you can plan for a weekday visit, you’ll definitely have a much easier time finding parking and exploring. Additionally, Water Wheel is in a flash flood zone. If you plan to visit during monsoon season, keep a very close eye on the weather forecast to avoid being in danger. You will need a Tonto pass to visit this site. Purchase one in advance to make things easy on yourself.

Once you park, the trail is just off to the left of the parking lot. It’s about ¾ miles each way to hike, and is not considered difficult. There is a small amount of elevation gain, but you’ll be rewarded with great views, and the chance to cool off in the refreshing creek!
Our family loves coming here in the warmer months! The girls love to take a dip in the water and eat a snack enjoying the view.
Don’t forget to pack towels, water shoes, plenty of water, and snacks. Plan on not having a cell signal while you’re there. Dogs are welcome to join in the fun, but must stay on leashes at all times (may be a good idea to provide booties for their paws, as it is rough terrain). Share pics of your adventures with us! We can’t wait to see. Stay safe, and happy exploring!
